0:00.0	One of the most interesting questions to explore in the realm of psychedelica is whether or not DMT is an endogenous molecule in the brain.
0:09.3	Is it the spirit molecule? Is it something that gives us access to spiritual realms?
0:13.8	Or is 5MEO DMT, for example, is it the God molecule? Does it give us actual access to God?
0:20.4	Well, these questions are now being explored with scientific rigor by people like John Dean,
0:27.7	who was at the University of Michigan, and is now taking his academic prowess out to Cali,
0:33.5	and also John Chavez, the founder of DMT Quest, which put out an amazing documentary with Mahomi Wimhof.

1:10.7	So the reason that I wanted to have John Dean and John Chavez on the podcast was this theory that really blew my mind,
1:17.3	and that was based on the discovery that John Dean made that showed that endogenous levels of DMT
1:24.1	in the cerebral spinal fluid actually rivaled the levels of other major neurotransmitters,
1:30.5	like serotonin. And so the speculation is that potentially DMT acts in a similar way to all of
1:38.1	these other neurotransmitters. It's just harder to measure because it's harder to keep active in
1:42.7	the bloodstream. So this opens up a whole spectrum of conversations about the role that DMT plays in
1:48.0	the brain, and also the role that the endogenous release of DMT, how this happens when you're in
1:54.5	an experience like the darkness retreat, or when you're in one of these profound satory moments where
2:00.8	the DMT is activated, or like an alien abduction experience, assuming that is happening in the brain,
2:05.9	and there aren't actually aliens beaming you up to a light ship, which frankly, I'm kind of open
2:09.8	to both hypotheses, but I tend towards the former one where this is a phenomenon happening in your
