Hi, from CNN. I'm Josh and Shana with the Five Things You Need to Know for Monday,

January 19th. Let's begin with President Donald Trump's latest attempts to control Greenland.

He's announced a 10% tariff on goods from several European countries if they don't support

the move, and that's a long list, including Denmark, France, Germany and the UK.

The tariffs would start on February 1st and go up to 25% if an agreement isn't reached by June 1st.

European Union representatives held a meeting yesterday to discuss options on how to respond.

One option is to refuse to put in

place the US-EU trade deal agreed last summer, but another is to activate something called

a trade bazooka, which would block some of America's access to EU markets, or impose

export controls. CNN's Nick Robertson is in Greenland's capital.

The sort of so-called nuclear option that Europe, European Union, all those nations,

could bring to bear on the United States that would potentially put costs on any Amazon

transaction, on any Visa or MasterCard transaction, incredibly wide-ranging and economically damaging.

We've got more news coming up, including hundreds of troops preparing to go to Minneapolis.

As anti-ice demonstrations continued in Minneapolis over the weekend, the Pentagon has now ordered

1,500 active-duty soldiers to prepare for a possible deployment to Minnesota.

That's according to a Trump administration source, and here's CNN's Arlette signs.

Those troops include two battalions from Alaska. What we don't know at this stage is what tasks those U.S. soldiers would be asked to perform.

But according to one U.S. defense official, it could include crowd control and other efforts

to assist in supporting law enforcement on the ground.

Multiple officials, however, stressed that this does not mean that a deployment is

imminent or even guaranteed.
