Hi, I'm Phil Kemp. Thanks for downloading assignment from the BBC World Service. Like a lot of people, I thought the migrant crisis in Greece maybe wasn't over, but it had certainly got a lot better. It's not dominating the headlines the way it did not so long ago.

What I'd not realized was that that crisis had been replaced by another

with thousands of migrants now trapped in Greece,

waiting to see if they'll be granted asylum in the EU.

And as you're about to hear, what's even more shocking

is the number of them that are unaccompanied children.

So it's getting late towards the end of the day.

And the last bit of light is fading behind the hills here and we're walking up to the back entrance of the

camp here on Samos.

I'm Phil Kemp with assignment on the BBC World Service and I'm on the Greek

island of Samos where a new phase in the migrant crisis is unfolding.

Thousands, many of them children, are now stuck here, unable to leave Greece,

waiting to find out if they'll be granted asylum in the European Union.

So in front of us there's tents all the way up this hill, UN HCR emblazoned canvas on our left, being held down with large rocks so it doesn't blow away. So this is a bit of extra cover they've been given to guard against the rain and the cold.

The truth is, although it's supposed to be a closed camp,

the gate at the back of this place is wide open and we're just walking in now.

many of them staying in reception and identification centers or hot spots like this one on Samos.

We asked for official permission to visit but were refused.
