A Jungian Look at Gratitude (and Why It Usually Arrives Late)

Have you ever suddenly realized, “I never really thanked them for that,” a parent, teacher, mentor, or community that quietly carried you through a hard stretch?

Gratitude is a psychological turning point: the moment you grasp that your life rests on the real, sometimes costly efforts of others, and how that realization can shift you out of self-obsession into a larger world of connection and meaning.

Today we’ll explore:

- How genuine gratitude usually arrives late because we don’t understand what motivates other people, and our empathy is shallow.

- The contrast between gratitude and resentment: how resentment can be necessary at times, but becomes toxic when we’re trapped in it.

- Gratitude can shift us from a defensive, shut-down stance to an open-hearted, process-oriented way of living.

- Why some gifts like life, care, education, protection, and initiation can never be paid back, and how a mature form of gratitude is often paying it forward.

- Religious and ritual practices of saying grace, giving thanks, and honoring the dead are ways of recognizing that our lives depend on ongoing acts of generosity and sacrifice.

- How gratitude can be a sign of individuation: moving through the world with a heart that stays open to both joy and suffering, and letting experiences change us.

If you’re curious about how a simple “thank you” can become a doorway into a soulful life, this episode is for you.

Three good friends and Jungian analysts, Lisa Marchiano, Deborah Stewart, and Joseph Lee,

invite you to join them for an intimate and honest conversation that brings a psychological perspective to important issues of the day.

I'm Lisa Marchiano, and I'm a Jungian analyst in Philadelphia. I'm Joseph Lee,

0:24.9

and I'm a Jungian analyst in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm Deborah Stewart, a Jungian analyst,

0:46.4

Thank you. In the United States, today is Thanksgiving.

0:53.8

It's a day that Americans pause and reflect about what they are thankful for.

0:59.4

So we thought it would be appropriate to take a Jungian look at gratitude.

1:05.5

We know there's a lot of science about a gratitude practice and how that can be helpful.

1:09.7

It can help mental health, resilience, physical health, even.

1:12.7

So we'll just visit that science briefly.

1:17.5

But then we want to, of course, bring a Jungian perspective to it.

1:21.1

So Deb and I are going to do our best to do that today.

1:28.2

So I thought maybe I would share some of the lovely, beautiful things,

1:31.8

totally in keeping with our theme,

1:34.7

that people have said about gratitude as the moral memory of mankind,

1:40.5

the memory of the heart,

1:43.4

the queen of the virtues. I liked those little quotes because they had

1:49.6

such a lovely feeling tone, and that is very important because gratitude is not about just doing

2:00.3

routine, social thanks for, you know, acknowledging something

2:04.7

that we just do because we were taught to do that. And neither is it about tit for tat.
