Well 17-year-old Julian Kopecki was flying on Christmas Eve in 1971 with her

mom and about 90 other passengers when lightning struck their plane and caused

massive structural failure. And so little 17-year-old Julian remembers being

thrown clear from the plane and she remembers looking down past her little

white dress in her high-heeled shoes down at the Peruvian jungle below and

commenting that the trees looked like cauliflower and then she passed out. And she

woke up, still strapped to her chair alone in a jungle, beat up, cut and bruised,

broken collarbone. But other than that, she was unharmed. And so she spent about a

day hiding under the chair from the rain and then she realized I'm in this

jungle canopy. I don't think any airplane's gonna find me. No helicopters gonna

find me. I'm alone. They probably don't think I'm alive. And so in the midst of

that extraordinarily disorienting experience, she just looked around and said,

I don't know where I am. I don't know what country I'm in. But I remember two

things my father said to me. He said, downhill leads to water and water leads to

people. And so in the middle of a disorienting moment, she said, I'm just gonna be

guided by those principles. And so she started to walk downhill. And she walked

and sure enough, found water, found the course of a river, walked along this river,

and in 11 days, she walked out of that jungle into civilization. There was
