The U.S. government has officially shut down. This is the first federal shutdown since 2019.

And this time, the issue is health care. Democrats are demanding

expiring health care subsidies be extended and Medicaid cuts be restored. But Republicans say they

just want to extend funding at the current levels that Congress needs to fund the government

first and negotiate health spending later. And since they couldn't come to a compromise before

last night's deadline,

the shutdown began. So what happens now? Well, paychecks are being halted for more than two million federal employees. The National Flood Insurance Program won't be able to issue new

policies or renew existing ones. Many national parks are expected to close. And social safety

benefit programs could be delayed. That includes

food assistance for women, infants, and children, telehealth services for seniors, and more.

And those are just a few of the many consequences of a shutdown. To open the government back up,
