Unfortunately, President Trump was skeptical.

Gordon Saundland, America's ambassador to the European Union, a Trump donor and Trump

appointee, and a key witness in the impeachment inquiry.

In response to our persistent efforts in that meeting to change his views, President Trump

directed us to, quote, talk with Rudy.

We understood that talk with Rudy meant talk with Mr. Rudy Giuliani, the president's

personal lawyer.

In his first closed door testimony, Saundland said again and again, he could not recall

key details of his Ukraine diplomacy.

Then he spoke publicly.

I know that members of this committee frequently framed these complicated issues in the form

of a simple question.

Was there a quid pro quo?

As I testified previously, with regard to the requested White House call and the White

House meeting, the answer is yes.

Saundland is a successful Oregon hotelier who gave a million dollars to Trump's inaugural

committee.
