I am Ari Melder and the top story.

In Washington tonight may soon be the top story in the markets or even on Main Street,

a president, summoning leaders to the White House scheduled for next week to face what

they're now calling a far more urgent threat of default with some Republicans threatening

to take the economy completely hostage.

The formal deadline of this hits within the month, which is earlier than some were expecting.

Republicans doubling down on threats that you may recall picked up in the Obama years,

but instead of voting against new spending, which is the standard way that a politician

or a legislator can curb the size of government, totally fine, you say, hey, let's not spend

as much anymore or you vote down spending bills.

Nowadays as you may have heard, many Republicans try to hijack the process of paying the bill,

the debt.

And they do that as a sort of a voodoo to try to scare the market, scare the White House

extract concessions and prevent the government potentially from paying the bills that it has.

That includes naturally bills run up by both Democrats and Republicans, including recent

spending on under former President Trump.

We suspend the filibuster in the Senate so we could raise the debt ceiling.

You know, that's not how regular finances work.

The debt ceiling is going to be a point of contention.

I for one will not sign a clean bill raising the debt limit.

We're going to have to use the debt ceiling and the spending Biden September to demand
