Summary
For the twentieth installment of “50 Weeks That Shaped America” we look at the moment that East and West were connected by railroad. Throughout the 1850s and 60s, railroad barons and the U.S. government worked to take over land push rail infrastructure across the plains, through the mountains and more. Along the way, some made huge riches and others met tragedy. Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how railroads started to transform the country.

| 0:40.1 | just typing into the Google Doc, two words, golden spike. Because it is definitely a sticky |
| 0:45.5 | phrase and it's one of those classic little sidebars in your high school history book. Can you |
| 0:49.9 | picture it now? It's maybe accompanied by the photo of a bunch of guys in suits standing in front |
| 0:55.0 | of two trains, shaking hands as the final golden spike is driven into the ground to connect to |
| 1:01.2 | railroad systems. One of those systems was pushing east across the frontier, another one |
| 1:06.3 | sneaking its way west from the Pacific Ocean, and all of a sudden, with that final spike driven |
| 1:11.5 | into the ground, the United States had a transcontinental railroad. |
| 1:16.4 | So, Golden Spike, it's a very cool phrase, it's a cool object, and as it happens, a story |
| 1:20.8 | that really does help explain how we arrived at this moment. |
| 1:24.2 | We arrived by train. |
| 1:25.1 | I know I get it. |
| 1:25.8 | No, how we arrived in general at this moment. The expansion of train. I know I get it. No, how we arrived in general at this moment. |
| 1:28.1 | The expansion of the railroad involves enormous wealth, staggering corruption, modern |
| 1:32.8 | capitalism propped up by government largesse, exploited labor, the promise of riches, new immigrant |
| 1:37.7 | groups. This is the story of America, folks. That also mentioned that there's just an incredible |
| 1:42.5 | amount of corruption, staggering corruption. Just so much corruption. So much corruption. So we will get to that, |
