Summary

My first matchday experience here in the United States this summer was a big, colourful, family affair.

Big Phil, the one-of-a-kind cheerleader I met in the stands wasn’t even all that into football - if he’s off his work and any US national team are playing, he told me, he’ll be there. This time he brought his dad, too.

And not to be outdone, my man-of-the-match, Diego Luna of Real Salt Lake (but born here in San Jose) had his family with him to watch him dismantle Dwight Yorke’s boys.

More Gold Cup Diaries coming up. I think it’s going to be an interesting summer….

So welcome to San Jose Airport. Wow, fancy meeting you here. The old expression is we have to stop meeting like this. No, no, we have to continue meeting like this. For me, it's reasonably early breakfast time on Monday morning for you, given the time difference, I think it's probably 1974.

Bouncing off the back of a big US men's team,

0:23.6

when you know I'm a lifelock USMNT fan.

0:27.6

There you go, I got it.

Dwight York's Trinidad and Tobago.

I don't really intend to give you any kind of run-and-run of play, except to point out that

0:40.3

for the US main team in Mauritio Pocitino, this victory was really important.

0:45.3

They'd been pushed about the last few games.

0:48.3

I mentioned before that they'd been beaten by Turkey and pretty unfortunate circumstances,

0:53.3

a defeat that now doesn't look all that bad

0:55.2

given the way that they were slapped about by Switzerland but they gave Trinidad and Tobago a real

1:00.4

going over hard work on a poor pitch what fascinated me what I hope will at least catch

1:06.3

passing interest from you is I've been asked to give on Michael Palin style my jolly diaries.

1:13.6

And frankly, I am really interested in what I've seen in this part of California, the Bay Area,

1:19.6

the way in which the US soccer culture functions and what the stadium experience was like.

1:24.6

So for example, all over the place, there were people dressed up as Uncle Sam,

1:29.2

there were people wearing US men's team shirts. Yeah, fine. But everywhere you look, there was a

1:35.1

Bayern Munich shirt, a Real Madrid shirt. There was a guy in an Arsenal, Dicklin Rice shirt,

1:40.2

a Furentina shirt, Inter-Miamy shirts, Argentina's national team shout with Messi on the back.

1:46.0

There were far far, many more international football shirts

1:49.0

than the word in the Tobago shirts.
