Summary

We go nuclear this week to investigate the future of atomic energy, the issues surrounding nuclear waste management and how a proposed new breed of hybrid fission-fusion reactors might help to boost nuclear fuel efficiency and minimise radioactive waste. Also, following the 65th anniversary of the first nuclear bomb test, we hear how the accidental wilderness created where "the Gadget" was detonated is now a flourishing example of biodiversity. In Kitchen Science we build a home-made radiation-detector and we get to the bottom of why humans kiss. Plus, news of malaria-proof mosquitoes, turning... Like this podcast? The arguments for nuclear are pretty compelling from a climate change perspective.

1:09.6

Well, typically you might expect a ton of uranium

1:12.3

to produce as much energy as a million tons of coal. It's a very important difference, because

1:17.5

when we're talking about waste products, the waste products from the nuclear energy is much,

much smaller. But how much waste does the nuclear industry produce and what can we do to make

1:29.5

sure it's safe? Well, scientists are beginning to explore new ways to merge nuclear fission, the technology

we use now, with nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun, to produce hybrid reactors,

which apart from generating power will also burn off the waste they make.
