Summary

"God can slay the giants in your life!" Is that REALLY the moral of the story when it comes to the infamous historical account of David and Goliath? Get ready as Frank peels back the curtain and reveals the hidden meaning behind the Bible's most famous showdown in 1 Samuel 17. Tune is as he digs into the history, archaeology, and related Bible verses from this remarkable victory while answering questions like:

  • What is biblical typology, what are some examples, and why is it important?
  • Does archaeology correlate with the biblical accounts of Goliath and the existence of giants?
  • How does David's role as Israel's champion point to Jesus?
  • If David points to Jesus, to whom is Goliath pointing?
  • Why did David take Goliath's head to Jerusalem?
  • What is the first prophecy in the Bible and how does it relate to David and Goliath?
  • What are chiasms and how do they demonstrate the divine nature of the Bible?
  • Which Bible verses help us understand the deeper meaning behind this historical account?
  • How do you summarize the Bible in 3 short sentences?
  • Why did God weave prophecy into history instead of spelling everything out plainly?
  • How is the Bible the greatest apologetics tool of all time?
  • What do the Bible's thousands of cross-references reveal about its remarkable design?

Ladies and gentlemen, we talk about stories in the Bible.

0:06.2

They're not actually stories.

0:07.9

They are historical accounts.

0:10.1

And on any list of the top 10 stories or historical accounts in the Bible, you're going to find the account of David versus Goliath.

0:24.2

And what I want to talk about today is what you may have never heard about the historical

0:31.3

account of David versus Goliath. I know you may have gone to a church and you may have seen a pastor go through

0:39.3

this well-known story, this well-known account, and say something like, God can slay the giants

0:48.5

in your life. That's the moral they take away from the story, the historical account of David and Goliath.

0:55.8

Is that really why that account is in the Bible? Is that why that happened? Too often, we want to

1:02.5

make everything apply directly to our current lives. And I know pastors and teachers have sort of a

1:10.7

pressure on them to come up with something so relevant.

1:14.9

But that, I submit to you, is not the lesson.

1:19.5

It's not the point of David and Goliath.

1:24.3

And there's a whole other number of intricate events going on that have to do with the big picture

1:36.6

of the Bible when David confronts Goliath and what happens there.

1:42.1

And for this, I want to go to Luke chapter 24 for just a

1:46.1

second because Luke records Jesus on the road to Amas with his two disciples who don't know who he is.

1:55.2

He's risen from the dead already. They don't know who he is. And he says this in Luke chapter 24, verse 27, and beginning

2:04.8

with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus explained to them what was said in all the scriptures

2:11.4

concerning himself. Now, they figure out who he is eventually, of course, but initially they don't understand.

2:19.2

And then when they realize it's him and he's saying, all the scriptures are about me.

2:23.9

What were the scriptures in Jesus' day?
