Summary

Today's Gospel presents the distinction between a generic spirituality, which emphasizes our decision for God, and authentic Christian faith, which is the recognition that God has chosen us in Christ. It is God's choice—his election of us in Christ as not only his followers but his friends—that matters most.

last supper an institution narrative or an account of the Eucharist. What we do

1:17.8

Jesus in the New Testament, which is why theologians and spiritual teachers

1:22.4

over the centuries have paid very close attention to it. I think to grasp the

1:28.4

dynamics of this speech is to grasp almost the whole of Christian spirituality.

1:33.6

Can I encourage all of you? Take the time to sit down with the gospel of John,

1:38.7

his account of the last supper and read through this high priestly prayer.

1:43.8

Well, there's a particular line toward the end of this passage that's a kind of

1:49.8

key that unlocks the whole thing. I think if we grasp this, we unlock many of

1:56.6

the mysteries and peculiarities of Christianity. Here's what Jesus said. It was
