Summary

God is not a name—it’s a title. In fact, the God of the Bible introduces himself by a specific name in one of the most famous stories in the Bible, the exodus event, when he works through Moses and Aaron to deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt. In this episode, Tim and Jon dive into the first movement of the Exodus scroll and explore the theme of God’s name.

0:07.6	These first stories and Exodus of Moses and Pharaoh, the plagues and Passover, these
0:12.7	stories are famous and not just because of all the movies.
0:16.1	The Exodus event is the event that gets appealed and referred back to more than any event
0:21.8	in the Torah.
0:22.8	In other words, when you go into the prophets and the writings and even the New Testament,
0:27.3	the Exodus event is viewed as the event that defines the name of Yahweh.
0:33.7	There is a repeated refrain through all of these stories.
0:37.3	God reveals Himself to Moses.
0:39.1	He has his showdown with Pharaoh.
0:41.2	He liberates his people.
0:43.6	Also, everyone will come to know the name of Yahweh.
0:48.1	That's the phrase, to know the name of Yahweh.
0:51.1	To know someone's name is to know what they are all about.
0:55.7	So Yahweh is on a mission to first reveal His name and His character, His purpose to
1:03.0	the chosen people.
1:04.4	And then through them reveal His name and reputation to all the nations.
1:09.2	And this is the major motif of the Exodus story.
1:12.2	And what do we learn about the name of Yahweh in these stories?
1:16.9	The revelation of the name attached to the liberation of the people is all connected here.
1:22.1	Yahweh is revealing His character in a new way in this story.
