Summary

Lecture 3 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. Although I thought I might get to Genesis II in this third lecture, and begin talking about Adam & Eve, it didn't turn out that way. There was more to be said about the idea of God as creator (with the Word as the process underlying the act of creation). I didn't mind, because it is very important to get God and the Creation of the Universe right before moving on :) . Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

I'm really looking forward to this lecture, not like I wasn't looking forward to the other

1:00.6

ones, but the stories that I want to cover tonight, one of the things that just absolutely

1:05.6

staggers me about them, especially the story of Canaan Abel, which I hope to get to,

1:09.9

is like it's so short, it's unbelievable, it's like 10-11 lines, there's nothing to it

1:14.2

at all.

1:15.2

And I've found that it's essentially inexhaustible in its capacity to reveal meaning, and

1:20.2

I don't exactly know what to make of that.

1:22.2

I think, because I said I was going to take as rational an approach to this issue as

1:27.4

I possibly could, I think it has something to do with this intense process of condensation

1:32.4

across very long periods of time.

1:34.1

That's the simplest explanation, but I'll tell you, the information in there is so densely

1:38.1

packed that it really is, it's not that easy to come up with an explanation for that.

1:43.5

Not one that I find fully compelling.
