Summary

New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 31 Woke Marxism might more accurately be called Woke Gnosticism, which is technically redundant. Gnosticism is one of the ancient "Esoteric" religions that has spawned cults, some weird and some dangerous, since Antiquity. In this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay gives a brief introduction to the Gnostic mindset and why it is the best characterization for the Woke phenomenon, Marxism, and all the rest. Hey everybody, it's James Lindsay. Welcome to another episode of a new Discourses Bullets

0:15.6

where I give you a bullet point summary of one topic from woke Marxism that you really

0:20.4

need to understand. Today, I'm going to pull back a big curtain. I want to explain to

0:27.8

you, I think that the woke movement, woke Marxism, critical Marxism before it, cultural

0:33.9

Marxism before that, Marxism before that, even hegaly and thought before that. Actually,

0:39.2

I don't know, that's a lot to unload at the beginning, but just roll with me. It's the

0:43.0

entire intellectual precursor set leading up to woke Marxism that we're dealing with today.

0:48.9

I think that it is all actually esoteric religion, the esoteric religions of the Middle Ages,

0:57.3

and even before that into the first century and before that into antiquity, rearing their

1:02.2

head in the modern and now postmodern era. These religions have names. They play a lot

1:10.1

of mixing and matching. I don't want to make this complicated. Nosticism is one. Hermeticism

1:16.1

is another, both rely on this concept of noses, which is a kind of specialized secret

1:22.9

knowledge. Nosis is the common Greek word for knowledge, but it doesn't mean common

1:28.6

everyday knowledge. The definition of noses, which is at the basis of gnostic or gnosticism,

1:35.7

is esoteric knowledge of spiritual truth, held by the ancient gnostics to be essential

1:41.2

to salvation. That's at least according to Merriam Webster. If we read from the American

1:45.6

Heritage Dictionary, it says it's intuitive apprehension of spiritual truths, an esoteric

1:53.0

form of knowledge sought by the gnostics. It's knowledge of the highest kind, specifically

1:59.7

mystical knowledge, and the deeper wisdom, knowledge of spiritual truth, such as was

2:05.9

claimed by the gnostics. So in this episode, I want to talk about

2:10.9

gnosticism. I'm not going to talk about noses further. I'm not going to talk about

2:15.3

Hermeticism. I just want to give you a rough picture of what gnostic, these gnostic people
