And good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to what you need to know on this Tuesday. It's good to see you and good to be with you guys. Yes, we're almost to the halfway point of the week. Almost. Dr. Derry, we have to talk about bird flu. You recently spoke to some scientists who are on the front lines trying to keep this from spreading. What did you learn? I learned a lot. It was enlightening to say the least. I traveled with our ABC News team to Michigan, to Michigan State University, to be exact, to interview Dr. Kimberly Dodge. He's the dean of veterinary medicine there, and we toured the laboratory where they're in collaboration with at least a dozen other laboratories across the nation to try to stop this outbreak. What I learned in that period was not only concerning, there were moments where I was, to

be honest, scared, getting reminiscent of my prior experience with other outbreaks that we've

seen.

Avian influenza bird flu has been around for decades, but what is different today is that

1:23.0

this strain is not only transmissible, infecting a variety of different species of birds,

1:27.1

but it's also jumping over species barriers, infecting ferrets to bears, house cats, and for the first time,

cattle. So what we understand so far is that this is continuing to be ongoing. Many are hoping

1:38.1

to see some relief from some assistance, but unfortunately, as everyday passes, this virus

continues to spread. And you just said it, it's been found in household cats. Should humans be concerned? The overall risk to everyday people is relatively low. A lot of these infections that we've seen in humans have been those that have been directly exposed to infected animals. But with that being said, you still need to make sure that you practice some level of caution. A lot of that can start in our kitchen, making sure that you're avoiding drinking raw milk. Pasteurization protects you from so much more than the possibility of Bird Blue, making sure that you're cooking your meat to the appropriate temperature, and then in general, making sure that we continue to pay attention. This is so much more than rising egg prices. That's good advice, Doc. Thank you very much. We appreciate it.
