with the close encounter with a great white shark in the northeast. Two paddle boarders surprised off

the coast of Cape Cod and now there's a new push to alert beachgoers to danger in the water. Matt Rivers here with us with that story. Hi, Matt. Hey, good morning, guys. You know, it's that time of year again, obviously, where more and more people are going in the water. There are more better reporting methods than ever. And so, of course, the number of shark attacks, the number of close calls,

1:27.6

it's all going to seemingly go up in the summer months. Just consider what we've seen over the past week or so, this new video showing, we showed it off the top of fins slicing through the waters off Cape Cod. These paddle boarders obviously stunned, rightly so, by what they were seeing there. And then there is this one down in Florida the other day. This person less aware of what's going on on top of a paddleboard heading right toward two sharks. You can see it there. You're like, look down. Look down. The sharks scattering, though, thankfully, as that paddleboard gets closer. And then there was a sighting of a giant shark in Rhode Island. And even right here in New York City, not that far away over near Rockaway Beach,

2:01.1

officials had to close sections of that beach for a bit because of the presence of multiple sharks.

2:06.6

And it's not that there are more shark bites than ever. There's just a lot more sharks in the water nearby.

2:13.6

Yeah, there's a lot of theory about warmer waters, maybe attracting more sharks toward the beaches. But generally speaking, it's just because people are more aware during the summer month. And everyone has a phone. Everyone's got a phone. There's more drones up in the air. So I think it's just more that we're seeing that kind of thing. Regardless, people are paying attention. And interestingly, so is the U.S. Senate, passing a bill named after a teen shark attack survivor. She lost her arm that will allow alerts to be sent to people's cell phones if there has been an attack nearby, similar to the kind of things that you get from missing kids or bad weather. So even the Senate is paying attention. It passed unanimously. So at the very least, guys, the politicians can agree that if there's a shark nearby, like, we should know about it. They can come around a very popular topic together. Yes, they can come together. Bipartisan support for letting people know about the sharks. Thank you for letting us know about the sharks. Matt, it's great to see you. Great to have you with us here in studio. And we're going to turn now to
