Now from Times Square, here's what you need to know. Good afternoon, everyone, and thanks for joining us for what you need to know on this Thursday. Harrowing story is coming out of Southern California right now.

It is heartbreaking there, and that includes the devastation and horrific images that we are seeing this afternoon. Overnight, two new fires erupting, one breaking out north of Hollywood Boulevard near popular Ranging Canyon, thousands of residents now under mandatory

evacuation causing gridlock landmarks like the Hollywood Bowl and Walk of Fame in danger.

There are a lot of fires they are fighting right now all at the same time. Let's go through them.

That sunset fire in the iconic Hollywood Hills. That's the one, the new one that DeMarco was

just talking about.

And then there is the sun swept fire in Studio City.

The largest of the blazes, the palisades fire between Santa Monica and Malibu.

More than 17,000 acres of one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the world reduced to rubble.

There's the Eaton fire near Pasadena, dense neighborhoods there

northeast of Glendale, and the smaller Hearst and Lidia fires to the west and north. Now,

smoke is such a huge problem. Dr. Deary, and I know you were an ER doctor there in L.A. What are

some of the things that people can do to keep themselves safe when

there's so much smoke around?

Yeah, I spent a lot of time in Los Angeles working in the emergency rooms there. Late

last night speaking to my colleagues in emergency medicine, most notably Dr. Peggy,

Sang, who was working near the Eden fires, taking care of patients. And something that continued
