Reckage from both aircraft visible in the frigid waters of the Potomac. That American Airlines flight from Wichita was getting ready to land at Reagan National Airport at about 9 o'clock last night, an Army Black Hawk helicopter,

apparently on a routine train mission colliding with a passenger jet.

President Trump speaking to reporters in a news conference at the White House just minutes ago,

calling it a tragedy that should not have happened and speculating on the causes of the crash,

saying an investigation is underway.

Let's bring an ABC transportation correspondent, Gio Benitez. He is there on the scene in Washington.

Gio, what's the latest?

Eva DeMarco, I mean, this is such a tragedy, and this is something we're not even any expert

that we've spoken to ever imagined seeing happening here over the skies in America, certainly not over the skies of our nation's capital.

So right now what we know is that this American Airlines plane last night was first scheduled to land at runway 1.

That's the biggest runway here at DCA. It's also the busiest runway in the country. It is nonstop.

It is constantly going. At some point, that was switched to runway 33. That is a smaller

runway. And we don't know why that happened, but a lot of times they do that to free up space

and free up different runways for bigger planes. This was a smaller plane with 64 people on board,
