The CDC is urging health care providers to stay alert for measles cases across the country?

I know there's an outbreak in Europe right now, but how is this concerning us and what do we need

to know here?

So the first big picture here, the reason the CDC is putting out this awareness alert is because

a lot of health care providers here in the U.S. have never seen a case of measles, right?

Because the vaccines have done such a good job in keeping those cases so

low right now let me take you through what the CDC is tracking approximately

two cases reported over the last two months or so in states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the Washington, D.C. area.

The vast majority of these are amongst unvaccinated children and teenagers.

We have to remember here in terms of the measles virus.

They are, someone is contagious from four days before they get the classic rash to about

four days after. The MMR vaccine, two doses will put you at 97% protected against infection.

Measles, I want to be crystal clear, you guys is known as the single most contagious

respiratory virus in the world.

One out of five people who are infected

could be hospitalized and the complications

if severe pneumonia and encephalitis.

So this is a reminder what happens when people are not current with those childhood immunizations.
