Zoran Mamdani will be New York City's next mayor.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda to parents of South Asian descent.

That is something he highlighted during his energetic campaign and in his victory speech

last night.

To my parents, Mama and Baba, you have made me into the man I am today.

I am so proud to be your son.

Now people in Kampala are celebrating his win as their own.
