The boys ran to New Brighton and told Coroner Dempsey.

John Callahan, a lad of 14, had been sent by his father to watch cows that were pastured on Staten Island back of New Brighton, not far from Silver Lake, and between that sheet of water and the paper mills.

It is an unfrequented region, and the pasture was at the edge of a wood.

Fully a quarter of a mile away was the nearest house. John had persuaded two or three other boys

to spend Sunday with him, and at about one o'clock they were chasing each over in a frolic in a gully at the very edge of the

woods in a spot concealed from sight of the surrounding country when he slipped down on the

barrel that had been buried side down and evidently only a few inches below the surface. Res had washed the loose dirt from over it so that a little of the rounded wood was exposed.

Coroner Dempsey called Dr. Walzer, and with a dozen others strode over the fields led to the spot by the boy. The barrel was quickly and easily pulled from its

resting place, and the body was laid out upon the grass. Wound about the head and shoulders was the

piece of carpeting that the boys had partly removed.

Closely wrapped around the body were two sheets of medium fineness, but by no means clean.

The body otherwise was entirely without clothing.

There were neither ring on her fingers nor jewels in her ears. Her features were regular, her limbs rounded, and her teeth unusually pretty and in perfect condition.
