Some people aren't treated well by history. We ridicule them. They become jokes, classroom memes,

belittled by teachers and students alike. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is one such character.

Lamarck believed that organisms changed to their environment as necessary and then

passed on these changes to their offspring. The most famous example is the idea that giraffes

stretch their necks to reach the tops of trees and then pass on whatever stretching they achieved to their kids.

The image you might see in a high school biology teacher's PowerPoint is one of giraffes stretching

with all their might, trying to reach the top of a tree, and with great effort, succeeding.

This seems stupid today.

I remember in high school laughing at the ridiculous idea,

Darwin's idea made a lot more sense.
