It's 9 p.m. on a Saturday night in Highland Park, a neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles.

It's the summertime and the nearby bars are buzzing with people.

I'm at a gas station of York Boulevard, one of the busiest streets in the area.

If I wanted to put a full tank, it would be probably like $280.

I'm here with Alvaro Volainis, a driver with a ride hailing company lift, and he's about

to start his shift.

Saturdays are the busiest nights of the week for ride hailing drivers, more clients and

less traffic on the road.

It costs Alvaro about $80 to fill up the tank of his black SUV, and sometimes that's not

enough to make it through the night.

This money comes out of his own pocket because Uber and lift drivers have to pay for all

of their expenses, such as gas, car maintenance and car insurance.

So I got a call.
