Summary

Gifting has lost the plot a little bit lately. Instead of feeling generous and joyful, gifting during the holidays can feel like a chore. We're exploring what's changed and how we can gift better. Plus, how to make managing wish lists less onerous and a few little luxuries we're recommending.

For Friends of the Show on Patreon, we each share something we're doing differently when it comes to gift-giving this year.

Welcome to The Girl Next Door. I'm Erica and I'm Kelsey. In every episode, we bring our different

0:08.8

perspectives to candid conversations that feel like chatting with good friends. We started this

0:14.0

show years ago when we were next door neighbors and still haven't run out of things to talk

0:18.0

and laugh about yet. Today's episode is titled Gifting Better because

0:22.9

we both have felt that gift giving has lost the plot a bit. So this holiday season, we wanted to chat

0:28.8

about what we think has contributed to that feeling, how to make gift giving meaningful again,

0:34.4

and share some ideas for managing everyone's wish lists and passing along ideas to extended family members.

0:40.4

At the end of the episode, instead of our usual laties, we'll be sharing a new segment called Little Luxuries with ideas to treat yourself or those you love this holiday season that are super simple and attainable.

For friends of the show over on Patreon, we're talking about

0:55.1

something different we're trying this year when it comes to gift giving. Okay, so you and I

1:01.1

started this conversation and then decided we wanted to save it for the podcast. So let's start

1:05.7

with this. Do you think online shopping has ruined gift giving? Is it something else? Like what feels off for you?

1:13.7

Oh, yes. I have just been thinking about this for the past few years. And I feel like we've started to have

1:20.0

conversations about it. So I do think it's kind of a multi-layered thing. I do think that online shopping and just the huge retailers like Amazon

1:30.9

that just have literally everything at a click that's at your door tomorrow. Right. Just, yeah,

1:40.1

takes, can really take the magic out of gift giving because if if everyone and I know not everyone

1:47.2

but it does seem like so many people are just buying things all the time what they need as they

1:53.2

need it then it's not really as exciting or magical or feel as generous to give someone something

2:00.2

because it just kind of feels like people

2:01.7

are getting all the time. So I think it's the consumption is up in general. So it's the accessibility

2:07.2

of stuff. Whereas before it would be like, oh, to get you like that particular sweater or game

2:15.1

or jewelry, you might have to go to a specific store that someone wouldn't be at
