The 1961, Blithe, England. A governess plays hide and seek with her two children. As the children

begin to count, she runs delightedly down the spiral staircase and hides behind the curtain. But she catches something

at the corner of her eye, something moving, something coming towards her. The governor turns towards the window and gasps as she sees a man approach her, staring right back at her,

a man who's been dead for several years.

Up until the late 1950s,

ghost movies had been fun for all the family, farcical comedies or spooky tongue-in-cheek thrill rides.

But in the early 60s, horror cinema was changing, maturing.

After movies like psycho, it became clear that adults were yearning for something

more mature, something more psychological.

And with that came two of the first mainstream ghost movies made exclusively for grown-ups.

One that dealt with perception, trauma, sexuality and psychology as much as they did ghosts and ghouls.
