Thank you. In 1638, English colonists established their first significant inland settlement on the high ground of the Virginia Peninsula between the James and York Rivers. They named it Middle Plantation, and it was designed to act as a palisade, a continuous fortification across roughly six miles of land.

This allowed Middle Plantation to serve as both an intermediary link and defensive

position between the settlers of the more established Jamestown and the indigenous tribes of the
