One evening in 1885, Sir George Brie Sitwell was celebrating his 25th birthday by holding a party at his ancestral residence, Renishaw Hall.

Not long after the ladies of the party had retired to their beds for the night,

one female guest came back out of her bedroom to tell Sitwell that she could not sleep in that room he had given her.

When he inquired why that was, she explained that she had felt

something cold kissing her in bed. She was the only person staying in that room. Sissitwell found

this rather amusing. However, when his friend, Mr Turnbull, heard about this, he had reason to pause

because Mr. Turnbull explained that a few years

earlier, another female guest who had slept in the same bedroom, had also asked to move rooms

after fleeing her bedroom in distress and telling all who would listen to her that she'd been

lying in bed asleep when she'd been woken by something ice cold kissing her on the lips.

Still, Sittwell was not impressed. He'd once been in the newspapers for having debunked a

seance as fake, and so he was a hardened sceptic. He felt that ghosts were hallucinations,

or delirium, especially if a lady reported seeing one.

Some years later, when renovations were being carried out on his ancestral home,

workers discovered an empty coffin under the floorboards of the room both women had tried to sleep in.

Who the coffin had been for and why it was now empty and hidden, under the floorboards,

has never been solved.

Glamis Castle was built in the 14th century, and it's where the mother of Queen Elizabeth

II grew up. It's located beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland, and set in the Lolan Valley

of Strathmore with a land of more than 40 acres. It has a reputation of being extremely
