If you've been reading anything about airplanes lately,

you may have found yourself feeling a bit spooked. That's because of a comment made by the head of

Lutonza last month that reignited a long-running debate about so-called ghost flights. Now, let's back

up here. What's a ghost flight? Well, let's just say on a ghost flight, you don't have to worry about a kid kicking the back of your seat.

That's because there are no kids or any passengers at all on ghost flights. Now, whether the flight attendants still have to do the safety presentation to an entirely empty plane, that remains to be seen.

Last month, the head of Lutonza Group, Carson Spur, lamented to a German newspaper that his airlines were going to have to make 18,000 of these ghost flights, which, and perhaps the understatement of the century, he deemed unnecessary.

So why, you might ask, would 18,000 flights take off and land with nary a passenger in sight?
