Summary

We come once again to Advent, the beginning of the liturgical year and the great season of waiting. Christian life has a permanent Advent quality, for we are always expecting the coming of the Lord. Now, Jesus came, he will definitively come, and he is coming even now—for the risen Lord wants to take up residence in us today. So Advent is, perhaps most immediately, a preparation for that coming; we are getting ourselves ready to receive the Christ who wants, even now, to be born in us. Well, how do we do this? Our readings for this first Sunday of Advent give us some wonderful instruction.

expecting the coming of the Lord. We're waiting for His definitive second coming.

1:15.5

We're keeping vigil. Think of the very last line of the entire Bible. Come, Lord

1:23.4

Jesus. Maranatha, come, O Lord. Well that's Christian life in general. That's

1:30.5

been Christian life for two thousand years. It'll be Christian life until the Lord

1:33.7

comes. Now three dimensions of Advent. The Lord came in history. That's true. The

1:44.4

Lord will definitively come. I've just been talking about that at the end of

1:47.9

time, the second coming. And the Lord is coming even now. Those are three

1:56.9

dimensions of our Advent season. Now what I mean by this last one, I'm going to

2:03.0

focus on it today. That he's coming even now. But I mean is the risen Lord wants

2:11.2

to take up residence in us today. Remember in the great story of Zacchaeus. Jesus says
