There's nothing like a little recognition, right? Getting cheers and applause when you

score a goal in your soccer game, being praised for how hard you worked on a project, but

as we're about to hear, when our desire for recognition outweighs our ability to achieve

it, things can backfire in unexpected ways.

I'm Rebecca Schier and welcome to Circle round, where story time happens all the time.

Today our story is called Getting Sgonct. It was inspired by legends told by the Abanaki,

a gonquin speaking peoples from the northeastern part of North America.

Some really great people came together to bring you our version of this tale, including

author and Emmy award-winning actor Terence Turell, star of the CBS comedy Be Positive.

His series of children's books includes Blackie, The She's, The Crown Kids, and My Little

Black Book.

Way, way back in the olden times, the most beautiful of all the animals was Sgonc.

In modern times Sgonc is black with white stripes on his back and snout, right?
