Summary

After years of enduring an emotionally abusive marriage, Sandra finally filed for divorce from her husband, Paul. She moved in with a friend, enrolled in school, and started making plans for a fresh start. But Paul and their 17-year-old son, Jason, were not pleased, and when Sandra held her ground, father and son began making plans of their own.

Detective Kurt began his career in law enforcement in 1971. Over the course of his career, he worked for both the police and sheriff’s departments in his Small Town. After starting in patrol, he became a narcotics officer for 10 years and then a violent crimes detective for 9 years. Though he retired in 2002, Detective Kurt still works cold case homicides on a volunteer basis for the sheriff’s department he served for so many years. He is also a volunteer consultant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

This case tells the story of a murder committed in the backwoods of small town, USA in the fall of 2001.

Just six months prior to the crime being committed, Sandra, wife to Paul and mother to Jason, their 17 year old son, filed for divorce, which upset her husband.

Though Paul had never physically hurt Sandra, he was known to be emotionally abusive, particularly when he drank, which was often.

Though they were quite private, friends and family sensed that there was a long standing discord between the two.

But now that their son Jason had been living on his own for just over a year, Sandra felt confident to take the necessary steps to separate from her husband and go live with a friend for the next four months.

That's when the reality of Sandra's decision really set in for Paul.

She enrolled in school and started making plans for a future that didn't involve her soon to be ex-husband.

Paul didn't like losing control of Sandra. It was getting to him.

So he asked their son Jason to move back home for moral support.

Both father and son were frequently vocal about their anger towards Sandra for wanting the divorce.

Sandra's own sister recalls a phone conversation where Sandra admitted that she knew her son Jason hated her and expressed hope that one day he'd get over his resentment.
