When I was in my early 20s, and my wife and I had just started dating, I did one of the

more adult and romantic things that probably I've ever done, but certainly up until that

point, I planned a surprise trip for us to Puerto Rico.

We wanted to see a lot of different parts of the island, so we had a car and we were driving

around, and we were heading off to stay this kind of rainforest eco lodge, and I was the

navigator who was looking at the map.

And I should tell you, I've got a little bit of a penchant for shortcuts.

Love a shortcut, and it's on the map that our eco resort was on the other side of this

mountain, and we just drive over the mountain, and we're so much faster.

So we started doing that, but it starts just absolutely pouring with rain, and we are driving

up this switch back road in the middle of the dark, and I keep looking at the map, and

I'm saying, okay, we're here, we're getting closer, we're getting closer, the road

gets more and more treacherous, I realize that perhaps we're not even on the road that

I thought we were, and finally, after like an hour of this driving, Michelle is getting

increasingly furious, appropriately so.

We arrive at a huge barricade that says this road is impassable, and has been totally

washed out in a mudslide.

So we have to turn around and go all the way back.

Short cuts, they're rum, they're a little bit hidden mis-sometimes.
