Hi, it's Eve here and welcome to Radio Headspace and to a new week. It's Monday. I hope you had a nice weekend.

I was in the grocery store the other day and I was waiting in line looking over the magazine covers.

One of the headlines read, Are You a Good Multitasker?

I smiled to myself as I used to think that certainly applied to me. In fact, I would pride myself on it.

Responding to emails whilst adding items to an online order, then texting a friend, then thinking about what's for dinner, taking the dog out and planning a new project in my head all at the same time.

And all that activity and switching of tasks would often leave me totally exhausted by the time the day was over.

But it was okay as I was a good multitasking person and got a lot of things done.

Now I'm not saying trying to be efficient with your time is bad. We all lead really busy lives and we have a lot of responsibilities and commitments.

But multitasking, or the way I describe it now is context switching, puts a huge overload on the mind, which is what can leave you feeling exhausted.

What's more, all this activity means for most of your day, you're not actually present for all the things that you're doing.

Your mind is heading in so many different directions that it's very hard to notice what is happening in the here and now.

It got me thinking about what my training has taught me, about the value of just trying to do one thing at a time fully engaged in present.

And I say trying as it's more about the intention. We won't always get it right or be able to do that.

But that is what mindfulness is all about, being in the present moment, free from distraction, with a soft and open mind.
