Summary

We have devoted several podcasts to the issue of how parents get children to read - off screens and into pages.  We talk about it - others DO something about it.  You might not expect to find Stephen Curry, the great pro basketball player, to be among that group.  However, Stephen and his wife Ayesha have a foundation - Eat.Learn.Play - and over the past few years they’ve given books every Christmas to every elementary school child in Oakland, California where Stephen started his pro career.  They invited us to Oakland to see the program in action.  Charlie went and had a chance to talk to the Currys about why they, like the two of us, think this issue is so critical. but you can start, you know, getting into the Happy New Year business if you want. Statue

of limitations on that never runs out. We have a really interesting show for you today, and we do

0:49.9

hope that you get to listen to it because Christmas season is busy, but we have two very

0:55.3

special guests who called us and said, we want to be on the podcast. Or their people did.

1:01.5

They are royalty in the city of Oakland, California, and in San Francisco. It is Stefan Curry,

1:08.2

the great basketball player and his wife, Aisha.

1:11.9

And they have done something pretty special.

1:14.4

Yeah, they have.

1:15.5

You know, I also have to say, just before we get into the special things that they've done,

1:19.8

I think I maybe know, and again, this has to do with my being a book nerd.

1:23.6

I don't hate athletics or anything, but I know like three professional athletes, period.

1:29.0

One of them is LeBron James. One of them is Travis Kelsey because he can't stay out of People

magazine. And one of them is the great Steph Curry. So the fact that we got this call was just

1:38.8

amazing. But they are hardcore literacy advocates in Oakland.
