The learning curve is steep, but Candice

Delacona is a lawyer who specifically helps families with estate planning, medical directives,

and helps your generation, too. She's the host of the sandwich generation survival podcast, which is full of

tons of practical advice for people caring for young kids and also old parents, plus knows

everything about estates. So that's sort of perfect, I think, for a lot of people who are listening

today. So welcome, Candice.

Thanks so much for having me, Vanessa. So tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you first find

yourself part of the sandwich generation? So I have been an estate planning attorney for the better

part of 20 years. And I think when we're

younger, it is a sort of remote subject. And when you're talking to clients across the table,

there is some solace in the fact that you're not talking about your own mortality. And then I

found myself in middle age. I was, you know, raising three kids. I'm in a law firm. I have a very busy job trying to be a good partner to my husband and a good friend. And I had an uncle here in New York City who was gay and lived downtown in the village. And I found myself turning into the caregiver, into the quote

unquote adult child, if you will, that I had been guiding all of those years before. And so I kind of

felt like I was in the other side of the conference table. And I needed the best advice. And I needed to

figure out really how to cope with it from the other perspective.

So why did you specialize in estate planning to begin with?
