Today, we will begin with an update in the Karen Reed case.

On a cold January night in 2022, John O'Keefe, a 46-year-old Boston police officer, was discovered

dead in the snow. He was lying in the front yard of a retired police officer's home where he'd

been attending a late-night party. The person accused of his death,

his girlfriend, Karen Reed, a 44-year-old equity analyst and former university professor.

Prosecutors say Reed backed her SUV into O'Keefe after a night of drinking and left him to

die in the snow. But Reed's defense team tells a different story. They claim O'Keefe was attacked by people

at the party who had some kind of problem with him, dragged him outside, and that they left him to die.

Even more explosively, they say that these people then framed Karen Reed in a massive cover-up.

The medical examiner found that O'Keefe died from head injuries and hypothermia,

but could not determine if it was a murder or an accident. Reed's first trial lasted three months

and ended in July with a hung jury. Behind closed doors, jurors had actually voted to clear

Reed of two charges, second-degree murder and leaving the scene.

But they were stuck on the manslaughter charge. The problem, they didn't know how to tell the judge

about their split decision. Now, Reed's lawyers are fighting to have those two charges thrown out.

Earlier this week, Reed and her lawyers took their fight to Massachusetts' highest court.
