Summary

Former Labour MP George Galloway is one of Britain's most controversial individuals, and is standing in Batley & Spen with the slogan 'STARMER OUT'. We talk about his pitch for the seat, including Palestine - but why he's focusing his fire on the opposition, rather than the Tory government which presided over 150,000 deaths; why he campaigned alongside Nigel Farage after denouncing him; why he campaigned for Brexit after declaring that he'd campaign for Remain like "anyone with any brain cells will be doing"; why he voted Tory after declaring he'd rather remove his eyeballs; and much else.

Hello, Owen Jones here, welcome to the podcast. George Galloway, hmm, quite a controversial

0:12.1

figure to say the least. We don't get on, I should just make that very clear. I block

0:16.9

some on Twitter about over half a decade ago, and I find, on politics, many of the positions

0:25.5

he takes are profoundly reactionary to say the least. He said some terrible things. More

0:31.5

recently, that includes jumping on the anti-trans bandwagon. So transphobic, you know,

0:37.4

almost expect a national newspaper to hire him. But he's standing as candidate in the

0:44.8

battle he's been by election. So I went to chat to him, and as I always do in these interviews

0:49.8

and listen to courteously, I asked the questions that I'm particularly interested in, not least

0:53.8

about why he voted for the Conservative Party and called himself a lefty after he said

0:58.9

he gouged his eyes out rather than do that about his association with Farage, his denunciations

1:05.2

of Black Lives Matter, sort of rhetoric you'd expect from Lovence Fox, who is supposed

1:10.7

about George Galloway very fondly, it must be said. But on Twitter, various people have

1:17.7

gone, ooh, you're a big Galloway fan and supporter, you love George Galloway. The evidence

1:23.6

for that being that I, after interviewing him, had a picture taken of me holding a chai

1:31.0

and a delicious chai, and an iced tea, which was given to me free by the end of the cafe

1:36.5

in exchange he asked me to pose with them. Galloway was in the background and that was evidence

1:40.5

apparently that I am a massive Galloway supporter. I'm not, but I do speak to people of all

1:47.6

political persuasions within reason, and this by-election is very, very important for

1:53.4

Labour and for the country, and he's a very big part of the story, not least disillusioned

1:57.6

amongst Muslim voters in Batlene's Ben, they're not exclusively Muslim voters, and many

2:03.4

of them are going to vote for George Galloway and I'm interested in finding out why.
