Summary

In this episode, I sit down with Richard Reeves to dive into his powerful book "Of Boys and Men," where we unpack why men are struggling in today’s world. From mental health to the evolving roles of fatherhood, we dig into the tough questions. Richard brings in some eye-opening data on education, employment, and how society’s expectations of men have shifted. This isn’t just about men vs. women — it’s about understanding the bigger picture and making space for real change.

Some highlights we explore:

  • Why men are falling behind in education and mental health
  • The changing role of fatherhood in modern society
  • The rise of men's groups and their impact

Look, it's still a problem that there are so few women in leadership positions, especially in areas like politics and to some extent and in business. That's a problem. It's still a problem that there's gender pay gap. It's still a problem that so many girls and women have to spend so much time worrying about their own physical safety. I could go on, but it can also be true that we're losing 40,000 men every year to deaths from suicide,

0:24.4

which is at a four times higher rate than four women.

0:26.8

That rate has risen by 40% among young men just since 2010.

It is also true that boys are half as likely to be in the top 10% of high schoolers by GPA.

0:37.4

It is also true that men without a

0:39.5

college degree basically have had flat wages for 40 years. It is also true that we're losing

And so if we allow ourselves the luxury of being able to hold two thoughts in our head at the

0:56.3

same time, and we can see that there's a bunch of issues that are really playing out

0:59.6

pretty strongly now for boys and men, as well as a bunch of issues that are still playing

1:03.6

out for women and girls.

1:04.6

And I think in some ways, this is a necessarily difficult conversation to have, but it's

1:09.4

both necessarily difficult and necessary.

is the sponsor of today's show. This book, first of all, it was years in the making. I wrote it

1:26.1

for you, for us, for the creators, the

1:28.5

entrepreneurs, anyone who is doubting that what they are doing is the right thing if you've

1:32.9

ever felt stuck, if you've ever gravitated away from risk. I'm telling you that if you're

1:37.2

doing that, you're avoiding all of the best stuff in life. The safe life that you're after

1:42.4

it doesn't exist and never play it safe was

1:45.2

written to help you rediscover your true self, to go beyond fear, to trust your intuition,

1:49.9

to embrace your authentic self and create the life that you love. Subhead is a practical guide
