What comes to mind when you hear the word Puritan?

Fanaticism, isolation, disease, intolerance, racism, maybe?

And perhaps you're listening and you haven't been brainwashed.

Maybe you're old enough to have not grown up during this time where schoolchildren are saturated by a self-hating American school system and American culture.

But it's undeniable that today the term Puritan is colloquially synonymous with moral rigidity and outdated severity.

Killjoy. Prued. Control freak. Tyrant. But who were the pilgrims and the Puritans really?

I was reading through left-wing publications

over the weekend, as I do so that you all don't have to, and I came across this article

in Vanity Fair. It's titled, Donald Trump's America echoes our Puritan past. And in this

article, author Jane Borden argues that the United States was founded by

Puritans, who she describes as cult-like. And according to this author, the Puritan's

apocalyptic ideology is a reoccurring narrative in American society, a threatened community rescued by a vigilante

outsider through righteous violence. And it became, according to the author, an American mythos

that reoccurs in Western genres, comic books, superhero films, and even in real life. She writes that this

doomsday thinking is, this is a quote, you guys, flaring now in Donald Trump's America
