The Hi, and welcome to our newest episode on crystals, minerals, and gemstones.

We're excited to delve into this topic.

However, I'd like to start out with a little bit of science here, which is not my thing. So you geologists out there are probably going to be cringing here, but I had a little conversation with my friend who's a geologist, and she tried to clarify a few things for me. and I wanted to start up by sharing that with you.

Okay, let's see if I can do this without screwing it up too much. So let's talk about a rock.

We have a rock. Each rock has its own composition of certain percentages of minerals.

Some of these rocks have quartz in them. Now, rocks are made up of these

minerals. Crystals are a mineral within that rock. And when we're talking about quartz,

quartz specifically is a mineral within that rock. And when it's this beautiful quartz crystal,

it comes out that way because it has cooled beneath the surface of the earth very slowly.

Now, gemstones are the same thing. They are these crystals. However, they are much more pure.

And maybe some water hasn't got to them or they were super protected. So they end up being much

more rare and much more clear and beautiful.

But they all are crystals and gemstones and minerals are all the same.

And Jude, this is interesting.

My friend was telling me that in the case of Hawaii, because of the volcanoes, all of that

molten rock is brought to the surface and it cools really quickly.

So therefore, Hawaii doesn't have natural crystals or natural quartz because it cools so

quickly. So in order for these things to form, they form beneath the surface and they cool very

slowly.

Actually, Patty, you are correct that there isn't an abundance of natural crystals here in Hawaii that are known of.

But I was going to talk about the lava rock during this discussion.
