Summary

At GDC 2018, Kirk and Jason tried something new: an edible game. Specifically "The Patisserie Code," designed by Thimbleweed Park programmer/designer Jenn Sandercock as part of her upcoming cookbook of edible games. Everyone had a delicious time eating cream puffs, thwarting Nazis, and learning to read old-fashioned cursive. You can find photos of the game on Kotaku: https://kotaku.com/we-played-a-delicious-edible-tabletop-game-1824083975 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

0:07.2

we've done before. First, I'd like to introduce our guest, Jen Sandercock, who is a game designer

0:12.7

and programmer most recently on the wonderful adventure games, Thimbleweed Park. And Jen, you are

0:18.8

here with an edible game.

0:21.2

Yeah, yeah, I am. Hello.

0:22.3

So what is this game called that we were about to play?

0:24.2

This is called the Petissary Code.

0:25.8

Okay.

0:26.5

And so before we jump in, just give us a little bit of background of what edible games are

0:31.7

and when you started making them and what you're doing with these things.

0:35.1

So I guess I've loved baking for a really long time and I thought and I like designing

0:38.9

weird games and I thought I should just put these things together.

0:42.0

And so I did and so I've kind of been noodling around with some edible games for at least,

0:48.1

I mean two years has been a bit more serious since I've been doing it but longer than that.

0:52.1

And I'm just, they're sort of all tabletop games, but if you don't eat, you can't play.

0:56.8

So I'm noodling with, what does eating give you?

1:00.3

Like, what information can you get out of eating that maybe you can't share or, you know,

1:04.1

there's secret stuff?

1:05.2

So tastes and stuff? Yeah, and just like different people's food preferences, you know, like some of the things don't have points values, but they have, oh, I really like candy corn and hate Reese's peanut buttercup. So I prefer this piece over that piece.

1:19.1

Interesting. So, and you mentioned that, so obviously there's no way for people to play these games right now, but you are starting an edible games cookbook?

1:27.8

Yeah, that's right. Yeah, so I've got 10 games that I've designed so far, and I'm aiming for 12,

1:32.6

and then I'm going to put them all into a cookbook that I'll kickstart. And yeah, each chapter
