Summary

In today's episode, we're discussing the Circle of Sex, a 1960s astrological representation of sexuality, and its eccentric creator Gavin Arthur. Join us to hear about how to have sex à la Walt Whitman, how to figure out if you're a Sappho or a Club Woman, and whether there is a faint possibility, just maybe, that the Circle is a tiny bit flawed.  If you would like to follow along at home, please have a look at the Circle of Sex diagram. We do our best to explain it, but it will hopefully make things a little bit clearer if you have a look yourself! Check out our website, where you can find our sources, as well as everything there is to know about Queer as Fact. If you enjoy our content, consider supporting us on Patreon, checking out our merch, and following us on Instagram, Tumblr and Bluesky. Each segment has a label such as 'Hyperheterogenic - Don Juan' or '3/4 homogenic - Lesbian'.]

Hello listeners, this is Alice here. I just wanted to flag a couple of things before we get into the

0:04.4

episode. First off, I want to mention that this episode was originally released as a bonus

0:08.2

episode for our patrons back in 2023. So if you hear us mention anything about it being a bonus episode,

0:13.9

that's what we're talking about. If you want to get access to all of our bonus content,

0:17.2

including more episodes like this one, you too can become a patron of Queer's Fact over

0:22.5

on our Patreon. I also wanted to flag that being from 2023, this episode does make one reference

0:27.6

to our co-host Jasmine by a previous name. With both of those things out of the way, I hope

0:32.0

you enjoy this episode. Hello and welcome to Queer's Fact, the podcast bringing you queer

history from around the world and throughout time.

And today we're talking about the Circle of Sex, a 1960s astrological representation of human sexuality and its eccentric creator Gavin Arthur.

Okay. I'd like to acknowledge the Bunurong-Bunwarang people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land on which we record this podcast, and pay my respects to their elders past and present.

1:11.6

We recognise them as the custodians of an oral history tradition far older than this podcast. Before we begin, I'll note that we have some content warnings. This episode

1:16.5

will contain sexual references, including discussion of a sexual encounter between adults

1:21.7

with a large age gap, and also discussion of outdated 1960s attitudes towards women, sexuality and gender,

1:29.2

as well as the use of outdated language and slows.

1:32.4

I'll say a few words about my sources before we get started.

1:36.3

So one of the reasons I'm doing this as a bonus episode is because I don't have a lot of good sources.

Gavin and his circle of sex came to my attention

1:46.9

through a vice article by John Nova Lomax entitled, This President's Grandson was more interesting

than you'll ever be, published in January 2017. Which president is his grandson off?
