Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by directing legend GASPAR NOE!

Given that Pip had a mere handful of hours to prepare before that nerve jangling Zoom chat admission screen came up, this chat with Gaspar Noe went as smooth as you could possibly imagine. If you're a long term listener, you'll understand the reverence to which Pip applies to the director of Irreversible, Enter The Void, and new film Vortex among others, and so it must have been a daunting but incredible chance to form the experience into a podcast - as you will hear, it not only covers Noe's recent brush with death and subsequent recovery, but also his process, the importance of casting and crew, life, love, substances, and film in general. It's almost an episode of Films To Be Buried With, to be honest. Have a look at the references below if you miss anything - most are here - but otherwise, enjoy this amazing chat with Gaspar Noe and lifelong Gaspar Noe fan Pip!

Welcome, welcome, welcome. This is the distraction pieces podcast episode 352 and this is an incredibly exciting one for me.

0:08.5

This podcast almost made me call it a day on podcasting on the podcast because it's an absolute high.

0:17.3

I got hit up on less than 24 hours and notice probably about five hours notice more realistically.

0:25.4

Yeah, five or six hours notice I got asked if I wanted to jump on zoom and have an hour with my favorite director of all time, gasp and no.

0:36.4

And honestly, I paused over the email. I went to say no because I thought I've not got time to prepare.

0:42.9

You know, if you're going to chat with with one of your heroes and someone you'd love to work with at some point, you want to be at your best, but.

0:51.2

I paused and kind of went, we got to make this happen though, right? So I said, yes, I got to prepare in and we jumped on zoom and we had an amazing chat.

1:00.7

And honestly, this one and the Steve on fry one recently were two that I finished and went.

1:07.0

Do you reckon I'll draw a line under it there?

1:10.6

Because it said it's the peak man is mad that I get to do this. I'm so grateful to you lot for listening.

1:17.8

Yeah, it's insane to me that this is something I get to do that I get to have these conversations with these amazing people.

1:23.7

And honestly, this went as well as I could have hoped.

1:26.6

Gasper is promoting his new film vortex, which is a massive change from his previous films, but, you know, equally amazing, just in different ways.

1:36.2

And loads of the same ways, but via a different approach, all very vague, but we get into it.

1:44.8

Vortex is in cinemas on the 13th of May and there's an awesome focus on gasp and away and a new French extremity season at the BFI Southbank.

1:58.1

All throughout May, a lot of you know, I've got mad love for the Southbank.

2:02.4

In fact, the current script I'm trying to get made is in many ways a love letter to her, Southbank, but that's much of a machinous.

2:12.4

I mean, unless there's production companies and whatnot tuning in, because as I recall this next week, I'm going into full pitch mode on this one.

2:22.1

And I think it's fucking amazing genuinely.

2:26.4

And you know you don't hear me talking about my scripts and stuff on the podcast.

2:32.8

I keep that all very under wraps, but this is this is a special one, man.

2:38.7

I've gone off on a tangent there. Gasps is amazing. If you're not familiar with him and his work, get down to that Southbank season if you can.
