Summary

On this podcast, Rad features Gary Weaving, Founder and CEO of Forgotten Veterans United Kingdom (FVUK). A former Royal Engineer who served in Afghanistan, he started the charity in 2016 following his medical discharge from the British Army. Failure to get a correct diagnosis of his physical injuries led him to spiral down, abuse substances, and lose the will to live.

He began posting details about his troubles on social media and was amazed by the response from fellow veterans going through similar difficulties. He started FVUK with his own personal funds to provide immediate and much-needed support for fellow veterans. To this day Gary does not take any payment or money from the charity for himself.

The mantra of their organization is "selfless commitment to others" and their goal is to give back purpose and hope to veterans forgotten by the system.

Now, I'm not saying Gary tried to battle the French. I'm saying Gary is at Fort Cumberland where I'm going to say that the SPS was formed, which is like the special boat service, which is equivalent to the special air service.

So if you've ever played Call of Duty, and you played the SAS characters, or you ever play Counter Strike video games, you play the SAS characters, or you know about the SAS raids, you know, saving hostages. SPS is equal, right?

2:01.0

Put it that way. And we knew they were formed here, because it's written in the history, but when we actually look further into it, this is the exact office they were formed.

2:17.0

Where I am sat now, apparently was the officer in charge. This is where his bed was, and it's documented that he sat on his bed and went, we need to form a new organization.

2:31.0

And actually, for something's quite funny comes to me, because I'm involved with various history groups, things like that, and they actually managed to get one of the original canoes that is incapable.

2:44.0

And we have it here now.

2:46.0

Say that one more time, Gary. Say that one more time. What was it that he had there?

2:50.0

Well, they actually, this history group that celebrate history and remembrance and actually managed to track down on the original Cockle Show Heroes canoes.

3:04.0

And it's actually in kit, and it's actually here in our charity today. And we're actually going to put it back together on site where they would have built it in the first place.

3:17.0

And we're trying to get some SPS veterans to come down, to join in in the rebuild, and then it's going to be shown in the museum and the history of how it's done off full cycling life is going to come back to this project.

3:31.0

So really pleased to be actually part of the history and the foundation, not only of the SPS, but also the history, the military history of this world.

3:41.0

That's really, it's really awesome. Now I had the pleasure to come and meet you at this office in this room. We shared tea. We had stories. We got to walk around the fort and check out the services that you provide.

4:04.0

Yeah, Royal engineer. I just want to, yeah, Royal engineer. So basically sapper, right? You used explosives and set up charges. Tell us what that is.

4:16.0

Well, as a civilian, I actually had tradeships and what I wanted to do is go into the army and not just be sort of gone for higher and be changing just the weapon.
