This year, my guest took a momentous decision to return to his homeland after years working

as an international public health expert and administrator.

Gary Kony was asked to come back to Haiti to fill the role of interim prime minister

by the transitional council set up

earlier this year to stabilise the country after years of political, economic and security chaos.

For Connie, it was an opportunity to return to the post he'd briefly held in late 2011, before being ousted by the country's

then president. But it is a position that comes with high risk. Much of Porto-Prince is controlled

by armed gangs, the most prominent of which is led by a ruthless former policeman, seemingly

intent on expanding his power. The country's economy

is in ruins. Almost half the population is experiencing food insecurity, and more than half a million

people have been forced to flee their homes amid shocking levels of violence. Not for the first time,

Haiti is looking to the international community

for help. A multinational security mission led by hundreds of Kenyan police personnel has begun

to deploy in the capital. But previous experience leaves many Haitians skeptical about the likely

impact. Prime Minister Kony is supposed to steer his country

toward free and fair elections within 18 months.

But what hope does he have?

Well, he joins me now on the line from Porto-Prince.
