You may have stumbled across this stellar Isaac Newton quote,

what we know is a drop.

What we don't know is an ocean, but in addition to that, I feel like the more we

know, the more we find out, the more we realize the ocean is even bigger than

we ever thought it could be. Take consciousness, for example, I know I'm

having this conscious experience. I certainly know that if you alter my

physiology in the right way that my conscious experience will cease or change.

I know this because I go to sleep every night. I know this because I've been

put under anesthesia, but I also know my own consciousness is much more complex

than that. I'm tempted to start riffing on the hard problem of consciousness

and so much of the other fair that we've mused about at length on this

podcast. But the point I really want to make in relationship to that

quote, and what I said about the ocean of what we don't know becoming

even larger is that we're waking up to the fact that there are these totally

other dimensions of consciousness that are totally strange, totally alien to our

own conscious experience, because we haven't a clue what they're like.

We have no idea what their perception is like, what it would be like to be

them. For example, one that we're around, but we take for granted, all of the

time is plant consciousness studies have shown that these creatures can be
