The history of the English Garden reveals more than expected about the past and its people.

This series explores the theme of gardens as places of work, rest and leisure.

In this talk, art historian Anne Liles compares the works of Turner and Constable as painters of English landscapes.

I've only got 20 minutes and I'm going to get the sign if I go over.

And it's quite ambitious trying to talk about Turner and Constable tonight just in 20 minutes.

But I always love the comparison between

the two because I think it illuminates the differences between them. And actually Mark was talking

about the little sketches that we love so much with Constable, the very rapidly painted, spontaneous

oil sketches and pencil sketches. But tonight, and here I'd like to refer you to your handouts,

I've selected just four pictures to talk about,

because obviously when you're talking about art,

it's quite nice to talk about specific pictures.

And ironically, the constable's concern are quite highly detailed,

whereas in fact I've chosen quite a loose Turner to talk about.

And that's what we're going to, I'm going to discuss those and compare them and hope that we can sort of tease out what made both artists tick, because they really are quite different.

As you probably know, you probably saw the Mike Lee movie.

And as you know, Turner was London born and bred.

His father was a barber.
