Summary

The Nats blanked St. Louis 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon to win their first series of the season. Mark & Al react to Joe Ross' second straight scoreless outing. What are realistic expectations for Ross in 2021? What do we need to see to no longer think of him as the 5th starter?  (12:55) Josh Harrison had 6 hits in St. Louis after missing the first 6 games of the season due to COVID protocol. The guys look at how the organization has a crafty knack for finding veterans that have been passed on elsewhere. While on the subject of veterans, Ryan Zimmerman took Adam Wainwright deep for his first homer since the World Series. (23:18) Juan Soto was thrown out trying to steal 2nd despite him having a great series. Is it worthy of a TOOTBLAN? (26:52) Al is quite fired up about the decision to hit Joe Ross 8th and Victor Robles 9th. What led to the lineup card decision to have the pitcher hit 8th? (33:07) We close with an update on Stephen Strasburg and preview the rotation for the 4 game series in D.C. vs. Arizona. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend. The Nats have a four-game weekend series against

0:25.4

the Diamondbacks, including a day game on Saturday before Sunday as well. Great time to

0:30.7

head to Walters before, during, or after the game. Nothing in two. Ross trying to finish it off.

He deals. Swing and a miss, he blew him away at 94 to the outside. Joe Ross with six shot-out innings. That's strikeout number five. And welcome to Nats chat for Thursday, April 15th, 2021, along with Nats Insider, Mark Suckerman of Massensports.com. I'm Al Galdi, host of the Al Galdi podcast, and we have a

national's win to discuss. We have a national series win to discuss for the first time in this

1:00.9

2021 season. A 6-0 shutout victory at the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon. Mark,

1:07.6

as hideous as the loss on Tuesday night was, that's how nice this victory on

1:12.5

Wednesday afternoon was. Very nice bounce back for Davey and the boys. They won a series, Al.

1:17.5

You know, as bad as things looked there, not that long ago, they won a series in St. Louis,

1:23.7

and you know which two games they won? They won the game started by Eric Fetty and Joe Ross,

1:28.8

and they got blown out in the game started by Stephen Strasbourg. Baseball, you never know what you're going to see. No, you don't, but if this is a sign of what's to come from those two starters, Fetty and Ross, you absolutely take that. You hug that with all your might if you're a nationals fan. Outstanding stuff from Joe Ross. much more on that coming up momentarily. We always enjoy hearing from you. You can tweet us at Nats underscore chat. You can email the podcast as well. Tim Schover, so you can reach us again, Nats Chat podcast at gmail.com. So so much to like from this Nationals win on Wednesday afternoon. But I don't know that you start with anything other than the starting pitcher. Joe Ross was terrific for a second time in as many starts this season. Ross and four Nats relievers,

2:18.1

none of whom you would call part of the A bullpen, the varsity bullpen, actually end up combining

2:23.1

on a four hitter. It's actually really great to see that. And Ross was awesome. Great, like I said,

2:28.4

for a second time at as many starts. Six scoreless innings, five strikeouts, gives up just four

2:33.0

hits, two doubles, two singles,

2:34.3

and one walk. He throws 63 of his 89 pitches for strikes. So far, so great for Joe Ross. This has

2:41.4

been one of the best, maybe the single best development for the national so far this year.

2:45.8

Yeah, I think you can absolutely make that argument because it's not just what he's done for

2:50.2

them to date, which

2:51.4

they've needed, but this bodes really well for the long term. And how long have we been talking
